Egg Sucking Leech

This simple egg sucking leech variation works in both rivers and lakes and will take a range of fish species. I particularly enjoy using it in the spring for barbel that are hanging around downstream of spawning carp. Improved Spork

This revised version of Barr's Spork is the 2nd fly from the carp fly tie & catch video. It's a very effective choice for shallow water carp that are searching for crayfish, shrimp or other mobile forage. I've changed some of the features of John Barr's original to address some of the issues I encountered while using it making, I think, a more effective fly.To support the channel and be eligible for giveaways head to https://www.patreon.com/flickingfeathers and become a patron or support through paypal.me/flickingfeathers Materials list Hook: TMC 2457 size 8-6 Thread: uni 8/0 Weight Bead chain Tail: Marbou Rib: Gold wire Body: TMC pellet dub or similar shaggy dubbing with a little flash Legs: Barred round rubber Hackle: Grizzly soft hackle BOTM 7 The practical angler is available here: https://amzn.to/3kLyBSW Amazon UK https://amzn.to/3EZxneY Amazon.com

Carp Worm

This deadly little worm fly is the first from the tie & catch video I made recently. It's a simple tie that works consistently in both rivers and still waters, especially areas with silty or muddy bottoms. Carp Fly: Tie & Catch

After a suggestion from a viewer I decided to do this video where I tie a fly then go out and film myself catching fish on it. The flies I tied were a simple worm and an improved spork. A couple of days later I took them to a local river for some small stream fly carpin'. Conditions were OK but rain the previous days had made the water a bit dirty, which made seeing fish difficult at times, but I still managed to catch on both flies, getting several eats on each of them. Backstabber

Jay Zimmerman's backstabber is a great carp fly, especially in nutrient rich waters. This backstabber is the fly I caught my first carp on, and it has been a constant in my box ever since.  Another old  one I did for www.sexyloops.com Tales of the unexpected  A couple of weeks ago, I'd never have thought of swinging streamers as a viable option for carp on fly. It's almost the opposite of everything I've learned targeting carp on the fly; fishing blind instead of sighting targets, feeling the line rip out of your fingers instead of watching the fish to hit the eat before the fish spits the fly.  But last weekend I made a discovery while fishing for maruta, a sea running species of Japanese cyprinid. The run has been a bit late this year but they eventually appeared in numbers and blasted straight up the Tamagawa to spawn. The main way of fishing for maruta is a swung fly, similar to how you'd fish for salmon.  This year I caught a grand total of zero maruta, but on 2 separate days I caught multiple carp on a red streamer being swung on a sink tip. The first fish I assumed was some kind of fluke, then 2 casts after the release the line zipped away and anot

Cicada Carp

On Monday I braved the heat to hit a river outside Tokyo for a few hours.  Conditions were pretty good early on, although it was incredibly hot there was nice, high, even cloud cover giving fairly decent light for spotting fish.  As I approached the river, the banks were alive with grasshoppers chirping in the long grass and cicadas screeching in the trees.  Things were looking good. I set up and watched a couple of unlucky terrestrials land on the water's surface, only to be quickly sucked down by waiting carp as they struggled in the surface film. Working my way a long the river I saw so may tailing carp that I almost took of my foam hopper but, stuck with  it until a few refusals demanded a fly change.  I stayed on the surface, switching to a size 6 Carl's cicada.  It proved to be a good choice. Carl's Cicada The switch was immediately rewarded with a nice common carp around 12lb that sucked the dry  down in slack water below a tree, almost in slow motion.  Ove
