Silica Shrimp

Another mullet fly from Colin Macleod's book. https://www.anglebooks.com/mullet-on-the-fly-by-colin-macleod.html This pattern is designed for fishing in slightly deeper water and should be allowed to fall through the water column to reach the level of fish that may be waiting to get access to the flats. Blowy

Another oldie from www.sexyloops.com Went out for the first seabass trip of the autumn on Monday, earlier than I ever usually do it as I prefer to wait till the weather starts cooling off, maybe late October. It was nice to be out in flip-flops and a Tshirt rather than bundled up like a polar explorer. Autumn is when you can fish big flies and target the larger suzuki sized fish. It's still possible to stay around the more sheltered marks and have a night of good numbers, but when the big bait is around and the pre spawn movements give the big girls an easy opportuntiy for some canabalism it's the best chance to get a 70cm+ fish on fly. So that was the plan on Monday night. I did have the lighter rod rigged up but the main plan of attack was seriously big flies on the 10. Unfortunately we were still getting quite a blow and a lot of swell from the typhoon that passed through on Friday. After poking about in some sheltered areas with nothing to show for it, we decided to head o

Paul Arden on Collapsed Tailing Loop Presentations

This is an obscure get-out-of-jail presentation cast! As a method of creating a slack line cast with a heavy fly, a controlled tailing loop can provide a useful function. This is not the video I intend for this week 😀 and that is coming tomorrow.  There are a number of collapsed casts, all achieving a similar layout. One of to intentionally dome the loop. Another is to use trajectories to collide the unrolling line with the water. One could Tuck Cast but with heavy flies you’ll need to swap your usual fishing hat for a helmet. And then there is this, which is arguably the most delicate.  It’s not an easy one to learn because learning to cast tailing loops is almost as hard as learning to avoid them. 🤠

Bodies In Motion

I've been thinking a lot about Bernd's post of the other week. There's a lot to unpack when it comes to how a fly behaves in the water and, based on a lot of conversations I have with people, I think it can be intimidating to some. But it can be simplified to a degree. First of all, I think it's a good idea to separate action from movement. Action for me is when the body of the fly (usually the hook or tube) moves, while movement is when the materials are moving independently of the hook. The Dahlberg diver illustrates this quite well. When tied well it has a diving wiggling action on the strip and a rise on the pause, but there is no movement in the head that is generating the action. All the movement is in the rear of fly, the marabou and flashabou breathe, pulse and ripple in the turbulence that movement-free head creates. Those soft materials continue to move even when the fly is at rest. Action can impact movement, but movement doesn't usually impact action s

Romy's Tagged Sand Shrimp

https://www.anglebooks.com/mullet-on-the-fly-by-colin-macleod.html This is a deadly little pattern from Colin MacLeod that will catch mullet around the world. The addition of the fluorescent materials to his original pattern really help the fly stand out so the fish can find it. If you are going to tie 1 fly for mullet, this is probably it. Time For A Fry -Up

Fry time is just around the corner and I've been tying a load of flies for some friends back in the UK. I've put a few in my own box too, just different colours because the bass and trout here don't have access to perch & roach. In the UK at least, when the fry feeding starts it's arguably the best chance you have to catch specimen trout in the lochs, lakes and reservoirs. And the best thing is you can do it on a dry fly! Nowadays there are a lot of foam based floating fry around, the patterns haven't changed much since the old patterns of 40 years ago, most of the new foam fry just feature more foam and maybe a fritz chenille or similar instead of mylar tubing for the underbody. What you don't see around so much are deer hair floating fry, the reason should be pretty obvious; foam is much quicker and easier than deer hair. But it's not as good. There's something about the way a spun deer hair body sits in the water's that just imitates a stunn

Moc's Beauty

Although I'm tying this on a waddington shank, this fly reportedly works very well tied smaller on hooks down to an 8 or 10. In Moc's book; Trout & Salmon Flies of Wales, he states it fishes best on the dropper and high in the water column. Paul Arden and Nick Moore discussing distance fly casting (and training) part 2

Head to www.sexyloops.com for more casting  chat and instruction Following on from last week, here is the second part of our discussion about distance, practise, training, balloons and lumi-lines!

Road To Recovery

Last week we had a few nice days of high pressure and no rain meaning the rivers could clear up, so on Monday I went to a river I'd not fished for a good 2 years. It used to be my favourite but a huge amount of construction work on the banks and a new bridge being built really disrupted things and I was interested to see how it was recovering. It was a bit of a mixed day and it certainly didn't start in an encouraging manner. The first sectionI was hoping to fish was completely different from how it was before, straightened into a long riffle over a flat concrete bottom. "flood defenses" and not at all a municipality burning up budget surplus to prevent future funding cuts, I'm sure... Anyway I was disappointing because there used to be some nice pools with little foot high falls between them each usually reliable for a smallie or a shot at a carp. As I walked downstream I saw what seemed like millions of pale chub, but nothing else. Nothing. I probably walked a

The Hybrid

John Montana's hybrid is one of the best carp flies out there. There are lots of copycat patterns, but none of them are any better than the original. It's incredibly versatile, very effective in a range of water types from muddy still waters to freestone rivers. Best of all, it's a straightforward tie that just catches fish. Loop Control

Some loop control exercises. Paul usually starts complete beginners with this exercise but it’s good training for any level of caster. Quick shout out to Graeme Hird and Lee Cummings for the “gravity wiggle” and Mark Surtees for the dancing routine (this will definitely give you space in your casting field). Embiggening

The weather has been awful here over recent weeks and the fishing has been suffering as a result. Dirty rivers, often too high to fish have become fairly normal, with only a few opportunities to get out on my local river presenting themselves. It seems unlikely I'll make it offshore for mahi and tuna this summer too. But it's not all bad. My mate John has asked me to help him pick out a rod, it'll be a spinning rod to get him started on the seabass over the winter. I'm pretty confident that he'll have some fairly quick success on the lures and then we can move him over to the fly once he's hooked. The down time has also given me a chance to catch up on a couple of fly orders for friends and mess about with my own seabass box. I might start the seabassing a bit early this year if the rivers continue to be in poor condition. I'm not really changing much in my box, but I've been chatting with Yasuda-san the captain I like to fish with and we're going
