Eel Punt

The eel punt is a great flatwing style pattern developed for striped bass that will work for any of the saltwater bass species. Although it will work during the day, I think it does best tied dark and used as a night fly offering a large profile and strong silhouette. Because of it's length it's also a decent pattern for avoiding smaller fish, they may still attack the fly but you'll tend to hook only the better specimens. Walking Alone

Another old one from www.sexyloops.com My second vaccine date was confirmed last week, I'll feel a bit better about traveling once I've had it. I still won't be able to leave Japan. Well I will, but it's unlikely I'd get back in. So instead of an international trip, I'm heading to Okinawa for a week of DIY flats fishing. I'm going to an island I've visited several times before, staying at a great little inn 30yards from the beach. The thing about this island is that it's known for having bad fishing, but I've found it to be pretty good and getting better each time I go. There are no guides in the area and it took several trips to work out where to go on what tide, probably why people don't think the fishing is great after a single  2 day trip. I persevered there because my first trip was in and unseasonably cold December and despite that I still spotted triggers and GTs before a freak cold snap put things off and killed off a lot of small re

Beadchain Seaducer

The Seaducer is a real classic saltwater fly. And with good reason, it's absolutely deadly! A very simple tie that pushes water and swims fantastically. It can be tied in any size or colour, both with and without weight to catch any fish that swims. Fish just bite them. Ostrich Tailed Deceiver

This version of Lefty's Deceiver is fantastic when you want a bit more movement in your fly. The ostrich will move more at slower speeds than the traditional saddle hackle, but can still be fished at pace when needed. You can confidently fish this fly for fresh and salt water predators from trout to tarpon, it just works for everything. Stu Apte Tarpon Fly

Lefty Kreh credited Stu Apte with being one of the first to develop these Keys-style tarpon flies and said in his Saltwater Fly Patterns that this fly, should be in every serious tarpon angler's box. It's a great fly, light and full of movement, yet striking enough to catch their attention. It's also a pretty easy tie so you can easily tie a trip's worth in a sitting. Tabory Snake

Lou Tabory's snake fly is a fairly simple tie that produces a phenomenal swimming action in the fly. The deer hair head displaces water causing the fly to shimmy and wobble slightly while also causing turbulence behind to make the soft, mobile tail materials come alive on the strip and breathe on the pause. It's a deadly combination that makes this fly a multi species winner in both fresh and saltwater. Okinawan Adventures

Another old one from Sexy Loops .  This one was written on 3rd of August 2019 Last week in Okinawa was a much needed break from the hectic life of Tokyo. I left on the 6 am flight on Monday, got a ferry to the island I like, had checked in to the guesthouse and made the 30 meter  walk to the flats by noon.  Wonderful stuff.  It was my fifth trip to this island and as it's all DIY fishing I've been slowly building up a picture of where fishes best when.  Pretty handy for my fishing mates as they didn't have to prospect so much. For me this island is primarily about the triggerfish, they are prolific with multiple shots available every day.  There are loads of picassos if that's your thing but there are unbelievable numbers of titan triggers and the odd pinktail. Of course trevally are always fun to catch and there are plenty of yellowspot, bluefin and brassies to cast to along with plenty of snapper, emperor and the odd tuskfish. GTs do show up from time to time (usuall

Book suggestion

In each episode of the vlog I've been recommending books. To make things easier I've also decided to share the book recommendation as an individual post on here. In this episode it's Ed Mitchell's excellent Fly-fishing the Saltwater Shoreline. to buy the book from Amazon.com click  here for Amazon.co.uk click  here (By using these links you'll help support Flicking Feathers at no cost to you) Although it focuses on the US's eastern seaboard it is a great read full of useful information for saltwater fly anglers anywhere in the world. I would say this is essential reading for anyone starting to venture out in the salt with their fly rod, and is certainly a good refresher for more experienced anglers too.
